What is my Why? Why did I set up Unplugged Tots?
What a big question.
There are a number of answers to this.
Skills Shortage
According to the World Economic Forum the world is in it's 4th Industrial Revolution. We have such a reliance on digital technologies, more so now following the global pandemic of 2020 and its impact on how and where people are working.
In 2017, the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) identified that there will be a skills shortage of technology jobs in the future, so we should start to equip our children with the foundations now.
“Prepare young people for the jobs of the future by ensuring that they are equipped with the right type of skills to successfully navigate through an ever-changing, technology-rich work environment, and give all workers the opportunity to continuously maintain their skills, upskill and/or reskill throughout their working lives.”

There will be a skills shortage and it can be filled if we start to ignite an interest in technology within our children NOW.
Equality
As a mother of daughters I want them to be part of a world where their gender doesn't limit the career choices they can make. Historic prejudices of society can compartmentalise people and the technology industry is currently heavily male dominated. By introducing children at this early age to coding, that interest will stay with them throughout their early years and open doors when they come to make career choices.
If however, they decide not to pursue technology as a career, the transferable skills will still be relevant.
Representation
Linking back to ‘Equality’ above – representation is really important to me. Highlighting and celebrating that there are people from ALL backgrounds in ALL job sectors is really important. Our differences shape our world and that's what makes our world work and we need more of it to make our world better...for everyone. I'll come onto a fabulous book about that in another blog.
I wanted to shape a future for our next generation.
I had an idea, it worked, there was lots of laughter and learning and it was great!
I feel now is the time to see if other families can benefit from some of my ideas.
