Unplugged Tots - Recipes, Algorithms and Sequencing

This STEAM activity is perfect for children (8 and under) who love making and eating pancakes! We will use the whole process from start to finish to introduce algorithms and sequencing.

The general activity:

• Practice listening to instructions

• Working out sequences

• Cutting and sticking paper, maybe some colouring

• Mixing ingredients

• Cooking ingredients with Adult help

• Putting toppings onto the Pancakes

• Eating the pancakes (the best part!)

To equip our children with the skills they’ll need for their digital future, Unplugged Tots activities introduce:

  • Algorithms - following a set of rules

  • Sequencing - following the algorithm in a particular order

  • Logic - working out reasoning

  • Pattern recognition - working out any repeating patterns

  • Deconstruction – breaking down problems into smaller easier to manage chunks

  • Resilience and debugging – fostering a growth mindset when facing problems and working through to fix any errors

  • Maps, Navigation and Direction – using landmarks to help us get around

  • Inclusivity, Collaboration and Representation – Listening, championing and respecting EVERYONE no matter what
